A VPN and a proxy both change your visible IP address. That is where the similarity ends. A VPN encrypts all device traffic and routes it through one server. A proxy relays traffic per application, usually without encryption, and gives you far more control over IP type and rotation.

## The core difference
A VPN works at the operating system level: every packet from your device goes through an encrypted tunnel to the VPN server. Apps cannot tell. A proxy works per application: you configure a browser, scraper, or tool to send its traffic through the proxy, and other apps bypass it.
Encryption is the second big split. VPNs encrypt everything between you and the VPN server. Most proxies (HTTP, SOCKS5) do not add encryption - HTTPS traffic stays encrypted end-to-end, but plain traffic is visible to the proxy operator.
