SOCKS5 works at a lower level than HTTP proxies: it passes any TCP/UDP traffic, not just web requests. That makes it the default for apps that are not browsers - game clients, torrents, custom scrapers, and tools without HTTP-proxy settings.
Most providers claim SOCKS5 support; fewer implement it well. Below: who has working SOCKS5, at what price, and when you actually need it.

## SOCKS5 vs HTTP proxies
An HTTP proxy understands web traffic and can modify headers. A SOCKS5 proxy is dumber and more universal: it relays raw packets, so it works with any protocol - FTP, SMTP, game traffic, P2P.
The rule: if your tool only does HTTP/HTTPS (scrapers, browsers), an HTTP proxy is fine and often faster. If you run non-web software or need UDP, you need SOCKS5. Most good providers offer both on the same plan - check before paying extra.
## What SOCKS5 proxies cost
- Datacenter SOCKS5: $1-3/IP/month
- ISP SOCKS5: $2-5/IP/month
- Residential SOCKS5: $2-8/GB (same pools as HTTP, protocol toggle)
## Authentication note
SOCKS5 supports username/password auth natively (unlike basic HTTP proxies). Prefer providers that offer user:pass auth over IP whitelisting if your own IP changes.
For most uses, a datacenter SOCKS5 IP at $1-3/month from a provider with real protocol support is enough. For sensitive targets, ISP SOCKS5 at $2-5/IP adds residential ASN trust. The ranking above compares entry prices and protocol support.
Not better - different. SOCKS5 handles any traffic type (games, P2P, custom apps), while HTTP proxies only handle web traffic but can be faster for it. For pure web scraping, HTTP is fine; for anything else, you need SOCKS5.
Datacenter SOCKS5 IPs run $1-3/IP/month, ISP versions $2-5/IP/month. Residential SOCKS5 is usually the same residential pool priced per GB ($2-8/GB) with a protocol toggle - do not pay extra for it.
No. SOCKS5 is a relay protocol without built-in encryption. HTTPS traffic stays encrypted end-to-end through it, but plain traffic is visible to the proxy operator. For encryption, use a VPN or SSH tunnel.
