Residential Proxies: Real Household IPs for Protected Targets
Last updated: August 05, 2026 · Tested with paid plans
Residential proxies route your traffic through IP addresses that ISPs assign to real households. To a target website, your scraper looks like an ordinary person on a home connection - which is exactly why residential IPs pass anti-bot checks that stop every datacenter pool.
The catch: no provider owns millions of home connections. Every residential pool is sourced somehow, and how it is sourced determines whether you are buying a legitimate service or riding a botnet. This page covers what matters before you pay.
How residential proxy pools are sourced
## How residential proxy pools are sourced
Ethical sourcing: users install an app (a VPN, a bandwidth-sharing app) and explicitly opt in to sharing their connection, usually for payment or a free product. The provider can tell you the app name and the consent flow.
Gray sourcing: SDKs bundled inside free apps with consent buried in a 40-page EULA. Technically disclosed, practically invisible.
Botnets: malware-infected devices sold as 'residential proxies'. Cheapest on the market, criminal to operate, and the reason to ask providers direct questions about sourcing.
Ask any provider: "Which app do your peers opt in through, and where is the consent text?" Evasive answers are your answer.
What residential proxies cost in 2026
## What residential proxies cost in 2026
Residential traffic is metered per GB - unlike datacenter proxies sold per IP:
- Budget tier: $1.00 - $3.00 per GB
- Mid tier: $3.00 - $6.00 per GB
- Premium: $8.00 - $15.00 per GB
- Budget tier: $1.00 - $3.00 per GB
- Mid tier: $3.00 - $6.00 per GB
- Premium: $8.00 - $15.00 per GB
Price correlates with pool quality and sourcing ethics, but not linearly. In our testing, some $2/GB pools matched $8/GB pools on e-commerce targets - the details are in our cheap proxies comparison.
Rotation strategies that actually work
## Rotation strategies that actually work
Per request - every request gets a fresh household IP. Right for search engines and directory crawls, wrong for anything with a session.
Sticky sessions - hold one IP for 10-30 minutes. Right for login flows, carts, and multi-page forms. If a provider's sticky sessions die after 2-3 minutes, their pool is unstable and your success rate will show it.
Geo-targeting - country-level is standard; city and ASN targeting costs extra and matters for localized pricing, ads, and content checks.
When residential is the wrong choice
## When residential is the wrong choice
If your target is Google results or public pages without aggressive anti-bot protection, residential traffic wastes money - a clean datacenter pool succeeds at 1/10th the cost. And for social platforms like Instagram and TikTok, even good residential IPs lose to mobile proxies, which carry carrier-level trust.
How we cover residential providers
## How we cover residential providers
LuckyProxy does not sell residential proxies and accepts no payment for placement. Each provider profile in our directory lists sourcing claims, per-GB pricing, and rotation options as published by the provider, with our notes where we could verify them.
FAQ
What is a residential proxy?
A proxy that routes your traffic through an IP address assigned by an ISP to a real household. Target sites see an ordinary home user instead of a server, so anti-bot systems treat the traffic as legitimate.
Are residential proxies legal?
Using them is legal in most jurisdictions for accessing public data. The legal risk sits with providers who source IPs without user consent - which is why sourcing transparency matters when you choose one.
Why are residential proxies sold per GB?
Providers pay for access to a pool of household connections, not for fixed infrastructure. Metering per GB matches their cost model - and it is a quick way to spot datacenter proxies relabeled as residential, which are often sold 'unlimited'.
How much bandwidth does a scraping project need?
Measure in a pilot: typically 2-5 GB per 100k pages depending on page weight and retry rate. Run 1,000 pages first, multiply, then buy. Never commit to a large package before measuring your real consumption.
What is the difference between residential and ISP proxies?
ISP (static residential) proxies are hosted in datacenters but registered under ISP ASNs, so they look residential while keeping datacenter speed and stability. Rotating residential gives you millions of real household IPs; ISP proxies give you a small set of static, fast, residential-looking IPs.
